Palliative Care

Hospice of the Bluegrass is a private non-profit organization which provides support and care for persons in the last phase of an incurable illness. Hospice exists in the hope and belief that, through appropriate care and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them. While hospice care generally takes place in the home, the Hospice Care Center housed within St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, and the nursing home team provide skilled, multidisciplinary care for patients who cannot remain in their homes. We serve 21 Kentucky counties and maintain six offices. Hospice of the Bluegrass is a member of the National Hospice Organization, is certified by Medicare and Medicaid and is licensed by the State of Kentucky.

Hospice is a team...which includes the patient and family, the patient's own physician, the hospice nurse, social worker, chaplain, and bereavement counselor. If needed, hospice augments the team with a home care aide, a trained volunteer and in some cases, lawyers, dentists, speech, physical, and occupational therapists other professionals to provide additional services and counseling.
